The goal of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is to ensure that each English learner develops linguistically, academically, and cognitively within a socially and culturally supportive environment so that students may meaningfully participate in all curricular areas.
Samuel E. Spaght Science & Communications Magnet values the rich diversity of cultures and languages our students bring to the classroom. At Spaght there are more than five languages are spoken in the homes of Spaght students representing seven countries of birth. Spanish is the primary language for the majority of ELs, but other languages include Arabic, Mandarin, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
Spaght serves over 150 English Learners (ELs) in early childhood through 5th grade. Our ESOL program staff of two teachers and a paraprofessional are able to provide a variety of ESOL services tailored to meet the unique academic language needs of each student. These services include in-class support and small group instruction. In addition to the ESOL staff, several classroom teachers have earned an ESOL Endorsement which requires taking additional courses and an exam.
